A aviary is the most important piece of equipment you’ll need to purchase for your new bird. A suitable aviary will assist in keeping your bird safe and healthy. There are many different types of aviaries, choosing the best one can be difficult fo the new bird keeper.. How do you choose the right one?
Firstly, research the species of bird you intend to keep. In keeping any type of parakeet, cockatiel or some other long tailed bird species, you will need a long aviary so that your bird can get enough exercise. Ideally, the aviary should be sufficiently long enough so the bird can actually fly from one side to the other. A bird with a heavyset body, such as a lovebird or a Sengal parrot will get appropriate exercise climbing throughout the aviary. These birds do well in a aviary that is taller than it is wide.
You should then consider the size of the bird aviary. Generall you should buy the largest aviary you can afford for your bird, a newly weaned handfed baby bird may feel lost and terrified in a large aviary. A young bird also may have difficulty locating food and water dishes. If you can afford to do so, it is a good to buy a smaller bird aviary for your baby bird for the first few months and then move onto somehting bigger.
Also keep in mind the spacing between the aviary bars. A great looking $400 bird aviary Is not very effective if your bird can fit through the bars! If you want to use wire mesh on your bird aviary then it is best to measure the size your mesh to the size of your bird’s head. A bird aviary built with one inch mesh is just the right size for a cockatiel to stick a head through. When cockatiels bring their heads back through the bars, they have been known to bend into a ‘U’ shape and put their heads into a different hole.
When the aviary size and bar spacing has been determined, consider some other design components of the aviary. Look at the cage tray. When removing it to clean, is there a grate in the aviary to prevent the bird from escaping? Is the tray deep enough for the mess your bird makes to be caught? If you still have a deep tray but there is no cage apron you may find the bird will still scatter a lot of seed hulls and feathers on the floor. Whilst you can put a plastic apron on the bottom of the aviary, a built in metal apron is a good characteristic.
To end with, don’t forget to have a look at the aviary cups. Ideally there should be an easily accessable opening to get to the cups without gaining access through the main door. If you are buying a bird aviary for a larger bird, the cups should actually bolt to the aviary unless you want to spend every morning and afternoon for the next 50 years reaching for cups that your bird has flung onto the bottom of the bird aviary
If you a replacing a bird aviary for an older parrot type bird, some owners have told me it’s crucial to get a bird cage of the same colour. It is assumed that a bird that has been accustomed to a white painted aviary, it won’t adapt easily to a metal coloured aviary.

Many a parrot cage available today in your average pet store are built to look great and get the attention of the parrot owner rather than being built with the parrot’s health and well being in mind. There are many things you should be looking for in parrot cage before purchasing. Here are some of the most essential things which you should always consider:
• Parrot Cage Size: It is better to choose a cage which is large in size. Give them the room to stretch and flap their wings to ensure they keep healthy and fit. Aside from that, a large parrot cage would also mean large space which birds do certainly need since they are used to with a wide and open space.
• Cage’s Bars: The next thing to look for and consider is the actual bars on the cage. Make sure they are well spaced for the type of parrot you are getting.

There are many different types of bird species, each with different nesting needs. That means that bird houses must be constructed according to the type of bird that the person wants to nest in the house. In addition, there are other animals that enjoy bird houses for homes, such as squirrels and even wasps. Since this is the case, it is often wise to build several different bird houses at a time so that the unwelcome guests can use one or two and the birds that are desired in the homes can use the other ones. There are some species of birds that are on the decline in their populations, so finding bird house plans that will support or attract these species to nest is helpful in preserving them for the future, such as the bluebird.
Bird House: Building a Home
There are some species of birds that require a bird house to be mounted on a pole so that pests and predators are less likely to be able to disturb the nest. The main predators that can disturb nesting birds are those that can climb into treesto get into the nest, such as cats, snakes, squirrels and raccoons. These creatures enjoy a tasty snack of the bird’s eggs or even the little nestling, so it is important to plan the bird house in such a way so as to provide the best protection possible for the nesting mother and eggs.
Size of the bird house should be according to the size of the bird that will be nesting in it.To keep bird safer from predators,entrance hole of the bird house should be smaller for the smaller birds. In addition, there should be a drainage hole in the bottom of the bird house so that any water that happens to get into the house or any waste material can filter out through the bottom of the box rather than sitting and getting moldy.
It is also helpful to build the bird houses out of a wood that naturally deters insects from the house, such as cedar. In this way the home does not get overrun with these pests, thus deterring the birds from nesting in it.To see the progress in the nest, there are houses built with a front that opens on hings so that the nest can be viewed without disturbing it.

If you have never seen the Alfred Hitchcock move “The Birds,” then you are missing out on a great horror film. This movie had everyone afraid of a flock of birds congregated in one area. For centuries and centuries birds have been objects of fascination for mankind. Birds have played an important role in history. It may be the discovery of new species of birds. It may be that certain birds are called harbingers of death. The one thing that is for certain is that they have been around since the dinosaurs and will likely be around for centuries to come, barring a huge climatic global change.
Light tales of love from Disney or twisted tales of doom by poets such as Edgar Allen Poe have kept the crow/raven in its sinister spot. In “Sleeping Beauty” by Disney, the villainess has a pet crow/raven that is used as her evil spy. Poe had his raven that kept crying “nevermore” in his piece titled quite apropos “The Raven.” Maybe it is the fact that crows travel in packs called murders. The birds portrayed in these classic works of fiction have certainly made their mark in our minds.
The wild bird definitely deserves some respect. It is just like other wild animal. You have to keep in mind that it is territorial, will defend itself and has to find a food source. And while crows/ravens have received some bad press thanks to authors and filmmakers, vultures and other carrion eating birds have repulsed mankind for eons. This bird species is a scavenger. Anytime you see vultures or buzzards circling in the air, you know that there is either something dying or something that has already died. Most people do not set up bird feeders to attract these types of birds. They want colorful birds, songbirds and delicate hummingbirds to grace their gardens and yards.
The birds that literature and film have targeted deserve a break. They are only doing what is in their nature. There really is nothing insidious about what they do. They do not target small towns to terrorize them. They do not bring a portent of doom and gloom to those individuals that they visit. They are two legged, winged wild animals that are what nature programmed them to be. It is a thought to keep in mind the next time you are in a movie theater, watching television or reading a book. Nature decides what these species are designed for.
